by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Jul 22, 2024
What could be more enticing to youngsters than Christmas that comes early? This summer Maine State Music Theatre invites families to experience Christmas in July at the Pickard Theatre and to share the magic of a musical never before presented here in Brunswick: Robin and Clark’s  THE STORY OF THE NUTCRACKER. Twinkling lights, myriads of trees, a market filled with goodies, and even a hint of snow …. all join forces to create an immersive experience for the Theatre for Young Audiences series. While Robin and Clark’s musical version of the Nutcracker story has been a Christmas staple for years in cities like Chicago and Lancaster, PA, It has not been presented here in Maine until now.  But after this debut series of performances, one can only hope it will become a new Maine tradition.
Review: CASCADE'S FIRE Presented by The Tesseract Theatre Company at The Marcelle
by James Lindhorst - Jul 21, 2024
Often new works at festivals, both plays and musicals, are unoriginal and rely on conventions that are commonly used. CASCADE’S FIRE is an adventurous undertaking that deserves to be seen. Gruenloh’s book is unconventional, and his lyrics are remarkable in their originality. Wernke’s piano score creates lugubrious motif but would benefit from some thoughtful edits and the performance of more skilled vocal musicians. It is a bold new work with an innovative plot and unique story arc. Tesseract is giving their audience a rarity with something that bravely challenges the conformities of musical theatre. Â

Review: MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Royal Opera House
by Franco Milazzo - Jul 15, 2024
There’s a singular simplicity in Madama Butterfly that draws in audiences year after year, decade by decade like moths to a flame: a man loves and leaves a woman; she gives up everything for him. With a staging that mirrors that bare but powerful concept, Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s 2002 production returns again to Covent Garden with more than a patina of authenticity.
Review: Hale Centre Theatre's THE NUTTY PROFESSOR is a Joyful, Tuneful Triumph
by Tyler Hinton - Jul 14, 2024
The joyful regional premiere of THE NUTTY PROFESSOR on Hale Centre Theatre’s Centre Stage in Sandy is one of the first productions of the new musical since the composer unexpectedly passed away during the initial run in Nashville in 2012. If you are a fan of Jerry Lewis, romantic comedies, or tuneful musicals, this show is a breath of fresh air. Support Hale Centre Theatre’s laudable efforts to bring theatrical premieres to Utah by adding it to your must-see list, and maybe even coming back for an encore.
Review: Tesseract Theatre's MY HEART SAYS GO at The Marcelle
by James Lindhorst - Jul 12, 2024
Gunn, Corpuz, Urday, Wilkinson and company delivered a compelling and entertaining production of the new musical MY HEART SAYS GO. The mundanities with the score and book are what keep this production from really soaring. Indigo’s coming-of-age story is not particularly different from what has been seen in other stories where a child makes a choice that is met with a parent’s disapproval. The themes are consistent with most stories about young adults pursing their dreams. Perhaps if the promising score were more dynamic and memorable, the familiar follow-your-heart story could reach new heights. Â
