Review: THE WILD PARTY at Musical Theatre Southwest
by Jackie Camborde - Oct 10, 2024
You have to hand it to Musical Theatre Southwest – most community theaters play it safe, filling their calendar with Mamma Mia, Shrek and at least one production from the Golden Age of Musicals (Rogers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Lowe, etc.); MTS continues to dip their toes deeper into the repertoire with shows such as Next To Normal and Carrie: The Musical. Playwright Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party falls into this category. See it now through October 19.
Review: SOPHIE DUKER: BUT DADDY I LOVE HER, Soho Theatre
by Kat Mokrynski - Oct 8, 2024
Sophie Duker: But Daddy I Love Her starts on a high, with music blasting and the lights flashing as Duker jumps into the audience, running around and dancing her heart out, encouraging the crowd to cheer even more for her. Duker then jumps back on stage and, with a grin, tells us the one thing we need to know about her - “I am delusional.”

Review: SNAPSHOTS at The Winter Park Playhouse
by Joseph Harrison - Oct 6, 2024
There’s a particular thrill experiencing the familiar in an unfamiliar way - seeing a favorite dramatic actor in a comedic role, eating a “deconstructed” dish with all the familiar ingredients of a favorite entrée but delivered in a very different way, or watching a new film that revisits a classic story. For fans of musical theatre, and in particular, the songbook of award-winning composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, the musical SNAPSHOTS revisits the familiar (and rare) and weaves Schwartz’ classic melodies into a new tapestry – delivering a narrative that resonates on a deep and human level and explores themes of love, regret, and the passage of time. In the skilled hands of The Winter Park Playhouse, this personal and poignant piece captivates, entertains, and touches the heart in a way that will move you deeply and then have you rushing home to hold tightly to those you love.

Review: DIE DREI VON DER TANKSTELLE at Metropol
by Martin Ganeider - Oct 11, 2024
Based on the famous German Musical movie from the 1930s starring Willy Fritsch, Oskar Karlweis, the legendary Heinz Rühmann, and Lilian Harvey, the stage adaptation is coming to Vienna's Metropol after a successful run at the Schloss Weitra Festival. The story is about three friends, Aris Sas (Willi), Vincent Bueno (Hans), and Benjamin Rufin (Kurt), who went from wealthy gentlemen to broke fellows who even have to sell their beloved car and start working at a filling station to afford a living. All three fall in love with Lili, the charming (and wealthy) customer. Everything is set for an entertainingly funny evening at the Metropol.

by Richard Sasanow - Oct 3, 2024
It’s fascinating that within two weeks, as the new US opera season began in earnest, Northeast operagoers heard a pair of new (or new-ish) operas by well-known creators: the US premiere of THE LISTENERS at Opera Philadelphia, by Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek and the much-revised GROUNDED by Jeanine Tesori and George Brant, the gala opening night at the Met.
Interview: Jared Goldsmith of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS at 5-Star Theatricals
by Cary Ginell - Oct 2, 2024
Little Shop of Horrors, the musical version of the 1960 cult film classic, has been as indestructible as Audrey II, its ravenous man-eating, soul music-loving plant. The 1986 remake, starring Rick Moranis, was the basis for the Broadway musical, which actually got its start before the Moranis remake, in an Off-Broadway production four years earlier. Since it finally reached Broadway in 2003, it has become a mainstay in regional and community theatre. The show's success can be traced to its Alan Menken/Howard Ashman score, a love letter to early '60s pop styles, including doo-wop, Motown, soul, and Phil Spector girl groups (the three-female members of the Greek chorus that hover in nearly every scene are named Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon in Spector's honor).
