THE GIRL FROM BARE COVE
An original folk opera written for five actor-musicians, THE GIRL FROM BARE COVE follows a family in crisis as they face the near-loss of one of their own. With songs inspired by the folk sounds of New England and a story rooted in the ghostly traditions and fairy tales of that place, this modern-day fable invites us to explore the communities we share and the worlds we build for ourselves.

WE ARE SEEKING ACTOR-MUSICIANS FOR THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

SISTER (Female, 18+ to play late teen – early 20s)
Any race, any ethnicity. Soprano. Must play guitar. A natural storyteller with a warm sense of humor. Something of an introvert, more likely to observe than to participate.

MOTHER (Female, 40+ to play late 40s – early 60s)
Any race, any ethnicity. Alto. Must play violin, experience with fiddle style preferred. Violin ownership also preferred. A strong maternal figure, would do anything for her children and family. A natural leader but out of her element, facing a problem she doesn’t know how to fix for probably the first time in her life.

BOY (Male, 20+ to play mid 20s)
Any race, any ethnicity. Flexible bari-tenor: F#2 to E4 (speak-singing is okay for lower range). Must play harmonica: expected to read notated music for the diatonic harmonica, improvisation skills preferred. Harmonica ownership also preferred. Must be able to play both male ingénue and charming villain. Likeable and clever.

FATHER (Male, 40+ to play late 40s – early 60s)
Any race, any ethnicity. Bass. Must play bass guitar. A strong and silent patriarch. A man who firmly believes in keeping a stiff upper lip. Uneasy with emotional displays.

PLEASE PREPARE THE FOLLOWING:

All performers must be able to read music or, in rare cases, learn VERY QUICKLY by ear. You do not need to be a classically trained or concert level musician, but experience is preferred as this will be an intensive rehearsal process.

Singing is a must, but we are looking for characterful voices, not necessarily beautiful ones. Strong acting is a must.

Please prepare 16-32 bars of the song of your choice. You may choose a Broadway number, but we would recommend something from the folk, country, blues, bluegrass, or soft rock canons. Pick something you’re comfortable with and something that showcases your unique voice—we just want to hear how you sing. We will have an accompanist available to you, but you may also choose to accompany yourself.

Please prepare also a 16 bar selection to showcase your instrument. If you choose to accompany yourself on the first song, then you do not need to prepare a second song. Please note, when you schedule your audition, whether or not you will be bringing your own instrument. We will have an acoustic guitar and an acoustic bass guitar available at the audition, but other instrumentalists are strongly encouraged to bring their own.
