LOOK UPON OUR LOWLINESS, a spoken word elegy for a chorus of male voices By Harrison David Rivers Director: David Mendizábal Produced by The Movement Theatre Company [TMTC] in association with Radical Evolution TMTC will present a workshop production of Look Upon Our Lowliness by Harrison David Rivers and Directed by David Mendizábal in April 2013 at the Harlem School of the Arts Theater.

REHEARSALS: February 27, 2013 – March 29, 2013 TECH: March 30, 2013 – April 3, 2013

PERFORMANCES (9 total): April 4, 2013 – April 20, 2013 (Performance schedule: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings) Casting Breakdown: TYLER DAVIDSON – (M) – A late-20–early-30-something year old gay man. African American. A musician. Full of light and love. A builder of community. Incredibly dynamic and charismatic. Sexy and confident. Humble. Note: The character of Tyler Davidson only ever appears on video in the play. We are looking for a Non-Equity actor, who is comfortable on film telling stories. We are only accepting video submissions for this audition.

MONOLOGUE: Did you hear about the man in San Francisco Who spontaneously burst into flames while Get this Jacking off in a private booth at a porn shop? (beat) Pretty incredible, right? (beat) Apparently the police Who happened to be stationed right across the street from the adult arcade Said that the man ran out of the front door "engulfed in flames" (beat) Engulfed. (beat) That’s a pretty serious descriptor. I mean, engulfed I picture like… (beat) Engulfed is no joke. (beat) The man died. (beat) Third degree burns. (beat) Experts say that it's not clear what ignited the fire But Given the man’s… preoccupation at the time of the incident One can’t help but wonder (beat) Was it hell fire? (beat) Perhaps a punishment for some… sin? Or was it simply something we’ll never be able to fully explain?

Synopsis: LOOK UPON OUR LOWLINESS tells the dynamic story of an eclectic and complex group of gay men of color in New York City. Part meditation, and part celebration LOWLINESS examines how a community is pushed to the brink and tested under tragic circumstances. In a world inundated by technology and constant communication, the play explores the interconnectedness of love, loss, faith, and healing, but above all else, celebrates life. The Movement Theatre Company [TMTC] is a Harlem based not-for-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to developing new works by artists of color and producing work that highlights both the collective and diverse human experience.
