SYNOPSIS:

Set in the early 1940s, Arsenic tells the story of newspaper drama critic Mortimer Brewster. Poor Mortimer! He's just a normal, run-of-the-mill guy who is anxious to marry his fiancé (the girl-next-door and a minister's daughter) Elaine. But standing solidly between Mortimer and matrimonial bliss is the wackiest, weirdest family tree that ever grew! His two sweet aunts, Abby and Martha have developed murder as their favorite hobby. Out of a twisted sense of sympathy, they regularly poison lonely old men with a mixture of arsenic and elderberry wine and then bury them in the cellar. Cousin Teddy sports a pince-nez, a handlebar moustache and regularly charges up San Juan Hill! And horrid brother Jonathan has just arrived from an asylum with a new face (ala Boris Karloff) and a sinister side-kick named Dr. Einstein. It's Home Sweet Homicide as Mortimer tries to thwart the police, conceal a corpse, curtail anymore killing, and convince Elaine that a wedding with a man who is drowning in such a murky gene pool would lead to nothing but woe. Arsenic and Old Lace is a truly classic comic melodrama, guaranteed to thrill and entertain!

SYNOPSIS

A woman hiding in a convent helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she rediscovers her own. This feel-good comedy smash is based on the hit film.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Please prepare a contemporary musical selection in the style of the show, and show off your range.

You may be asked to sing from the score as well.

Be prepared to do a movement audition as well as read side from the script.

Callbacks will be held on Saturday and/or Sunday,

March 11 & 12.

Delores Van Cartier - African American, talented Vegas lounge singer, with alot of charm and energy. Must have very strong stage presence and a powerfully beautiful voice. Naturally gifted actress needed, as she truly carries the show.

Eddie Souther - African American, smart and caring detective with some self-image issues. Starts as a nervous and unsure young-ish man, and develops into a strong and very capable policeman. Must sing and dance well - has a solo number requiring star power ! Bari-tenor.

Curtis Jackson - prefer African American, but am open to any ethnicity : a drug dealer and gangster. The villain of the piece - genuinely dangerous and scary, but able to pull off a Barry White style number too. Baritone, with strong acting skills. Taller / larger actor preferred, but not required.

ALL OTHER ROLES ARE OPEN TO ANY ETHNICITY

While the film is iconic, I am willing to cast outside of the usual suspects - talent first and foremost.

Mother Superior - need powerful singer and actress to create this strong-willed and impressive woman. Runs the church with an iron will, but is also empathetic and thoughtful. At first, seems rigid & unable to be moved, but becomes changed by Delores' loving spirit.

Sister Mary Lazarus - old, cranky, loud, likes things the way they are ! (Damn it !) Very funny actress with a strong alto voice.

Sister Mary Patrick - terminally delightful and upbeat nun. Always genuinely optimistic and hopeful. Need very funny actress with strong singing voice. Tall and/or larger women encouraged but not required.

Sister Mary Robert - young and shy novice, who is painfully introverted - at first. Must appear young and prefer a shorter / smaller actress. Must have ridiculously powerful voice with a very high and healthy belt !

Sister Mary Martin-of-Tours - nun, oddball character, must sing well. Can be played as ancient (old) or in her own world (mentally) or truly loopy. Open to many possibilities...

Monsignor O'Hara - Male, middle-aged or older. The true head of this church. Dryly funny. Understands the politics required to keep everyone happy. Acting role, primarily.

Curtis' Crew : male, need triple threats in all of these roles - strong singers who move very well.

TJ - Nephew of Curtis, naive goofball, a funny idiot. Younger actor required.

Pablo - wannabee latin lover, Puerto Rican / Hispanic, funny and odd.

Joey - Large man, the muscle of the crew - although not actually brave nor capable.

Nuns - The backbone and real soul of the show. Need a large group of very diverse and talented women, all of whom sing extremely well and move with confidence and joy. Seeking any and all types, ethnicities, sizes, shapes, voice parts - as long as the musicianship is solid ! All must create individual

and special characters, with or without dialogue, so that NO ONE is just a place-holder on stage. The audience has to fall in love with each and every one of these nuns / stars - NOT a chorus.

Also need a small male ensemble to play gangsters, bikers, altar boys / men, various. All need to sing well, and some dance ability is a plus.
