Summary:
Oscar Wilde’s “A Woman of No Importance” is a satirical work that examines the double-standards and expectations placed upon women. It begins at a country dinner party where a dark secret is threatened to be revealed. The hostess, Lady Hunstanton, has invited a young man, Gerald Arbuthnot, who was just offered a position as secretary to Lord George Illingworth and Lord Illingworth himself. Yet neither of them knows that they are son and father. Then, when Gerald’s mother Rachel Arbuthnot arrives Lord Illingworth begins to piece the truth together. When Mrs. Rachel Arbuthnot finds time alone with Lord Illingworth, it is revealed that when Rachel had become pregnant years ago George refused to marry her. Rachel is left with a terrible decision: Destroy her relationship with her son by telling the truth, or allow Illingworth to poison her son's mind by keeping the past a secret.

Character Breakdowns
1. Mrs. Rachel Arbuthnot (F) – [Any ethnicity] Age: Late 30’s - Early 40’s. A sorrowful woman with a heartbreaking past. She has sacrificed everything for her son and lives with a constant sense of shame weighing her down.
2. Hester Worsley (F) - [Any ethnicity] Age: 20’s. Hester is an American young woman who is idealistic, outspoken and somewhat naïve. She is a Puritan that lives by a strict moral code.
3. Mrs. Allonby (F) - [Any ethnicity] Age: 30’s - 40’s. An English woman with a deadly wit and immensely charming. Intelligent and dangerous, she enjoys playing with people’s emotions.
4. Lady Stutfield (F) – [Any ethnicity] Age: 30’s. A delicate and soft-spoken English woman. She’s a romantic thinker whose quietness creates a sense of mystery. Her kindness attracts the people around her, but she is a bit of a follower.
5. Lady Caroline Pontefract (F) – [Any ethnicity] Age: Late 40’s - 50’s. A woman with a unfortune past love life who has become overprotective of her husband (some might describe her as overbearing). She’s also a rather conservative person.
6. Lady Jane Hunstanton (F) - [Any ethnicity] Age: 50’s - 60’s. The rather forgetful, hostess of the dinner party. She is a pleasant English woman who loves company.
7. Lord George Harford Illingworth (M) – [Any ethnicity] Age: Late 30’s - Early 40’s. An extremely witting man with little morals or scruples. His charm has allowed him to behave poorly throughout his life.
8. Sir John Pontefract (M) – [Any ethnicity] Age: 50’s - 60’s. Husband number four. He’s learning to become an expert escape artist from his wife.
9. Mr. Kelvin (M) – [Any ethnicity] Age: 30’s-40’s. A guest at the dinner party and a member of Parliament. He is a modern thinker for his time who cares about the suffering of the people.
10. Gerald Arbuthnot (M) – [Any ethnicity] Age: 20’s. An English young man with a kind heart and is eager to please others. He is a bit unobservant and naïve, however he has a big heart. Gerald has a strict code of what is right and wrong.
