NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) showcases Asian and Asian American talent behind and in front of the camera across two programs this month as part of InFocus: Asian Cinema, along with the world premiere of director Alex Ferraris latest feature film, On the Corner of Ego and Desire. The night begins with shorts program InFocus: Asian Cinema Self-Determination, featuring stories of individual exploration and identity across genres and mediums contemplative animation, web series, dreamlike and experimental narratives, and narrative drama.Next, we present InFocus: Asian Cinema Family Ties, a collection of short films exploring family and generational themes, including a comical and heartfelt story of young woman digging into her familys past as a topic for her podcast, the culture clash between a womans familys wishes for her to marry soon and who she knows she is, a man torn between his work ethic and his family at home, a mother trying to protect her son, and a young man coping with the loss of his grandmother by searching for a tortoise. The night concludes with On the Corner of Ego and Desire from director Alex Ferrari, a tongue-in-cheek look at the very real struggles on indie filmmaking (and of navigating the landscape of the Sundance Film Festival), as we follow three indie filmmakers to Sundance in search of a big producer.Single Film Programs are $10 and All-Access Passes with all films with open bar for 7+ hours are $15.
